8 Natural Skin Care Recipes

There are a lot of great skin care and beauty products out there, but some of them are filled with irritating ingredients. One that gets a lot of negative publicity is parabens. Parabens are acid compounds that are added to prevent fungus and bacteria growth in skin care creams, cleansers, and serums.

Common parabens include butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, ethylparaben, and methylparaben. Some claim they are skin irritants that are linked to cancer. But other studies have shown low levels in skin care products should not be a great concern.

If you are worried, you could always make your own skin care. There are many books and recipes out there pertaining to it, along with many places and websites you can purchase your natural ingredients from. I have made some delectable body scrubs and bath bombs with natural ingredients that made my skin incredibly soft.

Another good reason to make your own products is it can save you a lot of money. I recently spoke with a client at the spa who told me she purchased a $500 moisturizer at a department store. I’m sorry, but in my opinion, if a cream cost that much it better make me look twenty years old again (smile.)

#1 Brighten Tired Eyes

 Ingredients:

1-2 Drops of Clary Sage Oil

2 Cups Warm Purified Water

Directions:

Do you have dark circles, puffy and tired eyes? Many people experience this from allergies, lack of sleep, or genetic factors. To remedy this, add one or two drops of Clary sage oil to a bowl of warm water. Stir to combine. Next, dip a washcloth into the water and Clary sage oil mixture and gently lay over the eyes. You don’t really need a lot of the essential oil for this recipe.

In Medieval times this herb was used to heal the eyes and help with vision. Discontinue use if your eyes start to burn or you get an unpleasant itching after the washcloth contacts your skin. The eye area is very sensitive so be very careful if you try this recipe and do a small patch test.

My favorite brand of essential oils is Eden’s Garden. They are pure and high quality oils. Click on the box below to purchase:

#2 Coconut Oil Facial Cleanser

Ingredients:

1 Cup Coconut Oil

1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar

1 Tablespoon Honey

1-2 Drops of Essential Oil ( See oils below)

Directions:

To make this cleanser, combine one cup of coconut oil with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey. Add one or two drops of rose oil, geranium oil, or lavender oil to the mixture. Apply your natural cleanser to your face, gently rubbing in circular motions, and avoiding your eyes.

Coconut oil has some great benefits for your skin. It is a powerful moisturizer that can repair and heal dryness. It helps with the removal of dead skin cells and strengthens healthy cells.

If you have sensitive or irritated skin, you can make a soothing version of this cleanser. Chop one cup of whole oats in your blender. In a bowl, mix the chopped oats with one-half cup of coconut oil and approximately 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Mix into a paste and gently massage into your skin. Leave the cleanser on for several minutes then rinse with warm water. You can buy the ingredients for this recipe below:

If you have aches and pains, you can relieve them by adding bath salts made with essential oils to your bath as well. Add one cup of Dead Sea bath salts mixed with approximately 5 drops of lavender oil into your bath water and swirl to mix. Relax and soak in your bath for around 20-30 minutes.

#4 Organic Clay Facial Cleanser or Mask

Natural clays have been used for centuries on the skin. They have many benefits to all skin types including:

• Deep cleanses
• Purifies the skin
• Heals
• Soothes
• Tones
• Nourishes

There are many natural skin care recipes out there that are clay based. Popular clays include Kaolin, Rose Clay, Fuller’s Earth, Bentonite, and French Green. The recipes I have provided include the last two clays named.

Ingredients:

1-2 Tablespoons of Bentonite Clay

Small Amount of Purified Water or Rose Water

2-3 Drops of Essential Oil (Rosemary, Rose, Geranium, Jasmine, Chamomile, OR Lavender)

Directions:

• Take a tablespoon or two of Bentonite clay and mix with a small amount of water or rose water to make a paste. Next, add 2-3 drops of a gentle essential oil such as rosemary, rose, geranium, jasmine, chamomile, or lavender. Apply to your clean skin and leave the mask on for 7-10 minutes as long as it doesn’t feel irritating. Rinse off well with warm water and apply a gentle moisturizer.

Bentonite clay is effective in pulling out toxins and is derived from aged and weathered volcanic ash. This clay is good for antiaging. It slows down the aging process by detoxing the skin. It tightens pores and reduces fine lines. To make this recipe you can purchase some of the ingredients by clicking on the boxes below:

French clay is another great ingredient to use in your homemade facial mask. It can clear blemishes, heal irritated skin, exfoliates dead skin, tightens pores, and reveals a smoother complexion. This clay is derived from weathered sediment, rock, and volcanic ash.

Directions for French Clay Mask:

• Mix a couple tablespoons of French green clay with aloe from an aloe plant to make a mask. Add 1-2 drops of chamomile essential oil and one drop of orange. Avoiding the eye and mouth area, apply the mask all over your cleansed face and leave on for 7-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

And be careful with the orange oil. Do a small patch test before applying the mask all over because orange oil can be too stimulating if you have sensitive skin. Apply a lite moisturizer after masking.

#6 Apricot Walnut Exfoliant

Ingredients:

2-3 Whole Walnuts

1 Cup Plain Yogurt

2-3 Slices of Fresh Apricot

1-2 Drops of Almond or Orange Oil (Optional)

Directions:

One of the most important things you can do for your skin whether you are dry, oily, combination, or normal skin type is exfoliating. Getting rid of the dead skin cells will prevent breakouts, reduce fine lines, shrink pores and give you a smooth, healthy glow.

Crush walnut shells along with the actual nuts (the nuts are full of essential fatty acids which are good for the skin) into very fine pieces in a blender or food processor. Also, add one cup of plain yogurt and a couple of slices of fresh apricot to your blender. Once these three ingredients are mixed, add 1-2 drops of almond oil or orange oil if you would like a great scent to your homemade exfoliant.

After you have cleansed your skin, apply your exfoliant and gently massage your face in circular motions. Rinse well with warm water and pat your skin dry. Only exfoliate 1-3 times a week. Over-exfoliating can really irritate you and break down your skin’s moisture barrier. Store the product you have left in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator and try and use within 4 days.

#7 Honey Turmeric Facial Cleanser

Ingredients:

1 Tablespoon of Honey

1/4 Teaspoon of Turmeric

1/2 Cup of Plain Yogurt

1-2 Drops of Neroli Essential Oil

Directions:

Honey can leave you with a glowing complexion. It is antibacterial and soothes dry, flaky skin. Honey is also a humectant which means it attracts water and is highly moisturizing. Turmeric is also beneficial to the skin in that it is anti-inflammatory, reduces pigmentation and blemishes, and is also antibacterial.

To make this cleanser mix one tablespoon of honey, ¼ teaspoon of turmeric, and one-half cup of plain yogurt together. Add 1-2 drops of neroli essential oil for to the mixture for extra healing benefits. Apply to your cleansed face, massaging in and avoiding the eye area. Let the cleanser absorb into your skin for a few minutes then rinse with warm water and pat dry.

#8 Natural Facial Moisturizer

Ingredients:

Favorite Carrier Oil or Butter

5 Drops of Essential Oil per 1 Oz of Carrier Oil or Butter (for facial blend)

15-30 Drops of Essential Oil Per 1 Oz of Carrier Oil or Butter (for body blend)

Directions:

Whipping up a homemade organic moisturizer at home can be enjoyable and beneficial. Your skin may need an extra boost of healthy oils if you are over 35. You can use jojoba, coconut, almond, or olive oil as a carrier oil. Or you could use shea butter, cocoa butter, or a combination if you want a thick, creamy consistency.

Any of these will work as a great base for your recipe. Add five drops of essential oil per one ounce of carrier oil or butter for a facial blend. You can use up to 15-30 drops of essential oil for every ounce of carrier oil or cream for a body moisturizer.

Geranium, lavender, clary sage, jasmine, vanilla, or neroli oils are good choices as they are mild.
